I hate Chinese food!

My Mom is from the Philippines. She eats in the asian/pacific tradition, one 'main meal' per day. This consists of meat or fish, with vegetables and sauce/juices with heaping portions of rice. yuk!
Sometimes the sauce is patis', which is squeezed from fermented fish, or diniguan, which is coagulted pork blood. Eww!
No, she doesn't use chopstix! Most asians eat with their hand, gathering the food with the finger tips. I guess you don't touch anything during the process. Icky!
No, she doesn't eat roasted dog! That's korea. No, she doesn't eat monkeys! That's Vietnam or Laos. She does eat baloot, which is partially developed, fertilized duck eggs, soaked in brine. Gross!
She eats a grip of fish. Peuw! I'd come home from school, and the whole house stunk of fried stinky fish. I'd wanna hurl! Or, she'd go to the fish market, and get a whole grocery bag of live crabs. They'd be clawing around in the bag, against my leg, in the footwell of the buick. Eeek!
Then, she'd boil them in a dutch oven, and you could hear them scrambling to escape their doom, which prompted me to peek: they're all dead! and they turned orange! She would then proceed to eat them all, with a load of rice, in a cracking and sucking session, while watching soap operas in the tv room. I'm outta there!
Why the ranting by me?

Aurei invited me to this tribe, not knowing! hehe!

I grew up in my father's homeland: White Mid-Western America. my Gramma, who was a paper mill factory nurse in Kalamazoo, taught my Mom how to cook American food. My grandparents owned a summer lodge, amongst the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. Gramma ran the kitchen and dining room, which was staffed by beehive hairdoed, hornrimmed glasses wearing waitresses, and a black cook, named Milzoura, who I thought was Aunt Jemima.
Every wednesday, they'd have a 'smorgasboard' for the guests, which was basically a buffet. There were roasted meats under heatlamps, steamed vegetables, potatoes, iceberg salad, and dinner rolls, fruit cocktail (ambrosia, I guess), pies, and chocolate cake. Yumm!

Comfort food! Yeah Yeah!

I love fast food, too! Pick a drive-thru!
we'd go to Dog'n'Suds, which was a drive-in, with girls on rollerskates, serving up hot dogs, french fries, onion rings, and root beer in frosty glass mugs, on a tray that clamped on the car window. Tasty!
Then, we moved to upstate New York, where I acquired my taste for Italian food. I LOVE pizza!!! We'd go to Tivoli's, which specialized in Sicilian style, which is a giant rectangular pie, a pan pizza with 2 inch thick crust (no, it's not doughy! It melts in your mouth!). I'm pretty finicky, when it comes to pizza, turning my nose up, on Domino's or Pizza Hut. Manufactured pizza reminds me of school cafeteria slabs. Hand tossed baby! the way to go!

OK! I've had my say...

Thank You, Aurei, for inviting me to this tribe, but I digress.

    Your more than welcome!

I hate chinese food too! There are some things I can handle eating, but for the most part, you go to a chinese food place and gorge yourself on one of them buffet things right... well then you feel all sick and pukey inside, the shit is heavy in the stomach. And not even less than an hour later, your hungry again.

It always makes me feel sick, so I don't eat it very often anymore... or at all. It's all about the sweet, suculent taste of pad thai when it's made just right. With enough spice to be hot, and enough brown sugar to be sweet. I am dying to know the recipes of the places I eat at.

One time carl and I attempted to make pad thai.. I found a recipe online, and got all the supplies (Poor Manoj had to be a taster, I think we all didn't want to taste that after we did). We spent hours soaking rice noodles, and then making the food... It was funny, especially with carl and I doing it, when we're both clueless about cooking... yes.. cos we too love fast food *i never wanted mcdonalds so bad in my life, till I went to burning man, and couldn't get it till I got back home....WHOA, that's just wrong!*!
So we made it, and tried it, no matter what we did, it was too salty, and it looked funny. I threw it away and went out to dinner. Heheh... what is the recipe from thai thai, what is the recipe from pad thai kitchen???? I shoudl just ask!

Anywho... everyone has a food they love and are addicted to, this happens to be mine. I hope that all of us who joined the PTA can make the best out of it. Share ideas and things, and maybe have a pad thai get together, where I am not cooking the food! LOL

    WELCOME ALL!

For me it's that damned Colonel Sanders and his secret ingredient in that Chicken of his that makes you addicited to it. Ooooooh...that man and his beady eyes and pointy beard.....He's not dead you know....him and Elvis are living together right here in Longview. They rule this town with an iron fist! Damn him for making me a finger licking addict. (that would be my own fingers!) I just can't stop myself....help me....

      I'm going to get a 3 piece....dammit!

If I have recipes some night my wife and I would gladly host a night of homemade pad thai. I am one of those people who loves cooking and being in the kitchen. Find those recipes and get them to me I will test them once or twice and then send out an invite.

Will do... I'm gonna go to dinner at all my favorite pad thai places (not in one night silly... I am too small bellied for that, but I am sure carl could.. hehehehe) and see if I can ask them what they put in it, cos of allergies... LOL, and then find out some things that way!

MSG... it just hit me, I wonder if MSG is in some pad thai???

I have another addiction to Chicken in a Biscuit crackers (and I am a cracker for it, it's wrong I know), and they have MSG... damn that blinding, horrible, and addictive stuff!

Ginger snaps are my hardcore addiction

I also either like really authentic Mexican food or the other extreme something like taco bell.

HA HA! Taco bell.... I was for a while... but I told carl we need to lay off!

Mexican is god, but its heavy in the stomach, I grew up eating it... (mexi-famz)... not too interested these days. Sometimes I like a Chicken Fajita Bean and Rice Barrito with enough guacamole and sour cream to make some people puke just looking at it, but hey... smother it... and it's better! YUM! Now I want that!

People in the NW for the most part don't know what good mexican is. I miss Tucson just because of the food in and of itself. I remember going to the Burrito factory all the time and it was so satisfying but definitely heavy. I still cook some mexican dishes but nothing to far out there. I still enjoy roasting stuffed bell peppers though and that is such a staple for me.

                Hahaha!

I titled this thread to express my ignorance/indifference to oriental food, basically to be a wise ass!
I'm chuckling over the discussion that follows, thanks Aurei!

Cheshyre: hehe! I worked at KFC when I was 17, back in Poughkeepsie, NY. It was a brand new one, and Col. Sanders actually came for the grand opening! Poor old man, he was ancient... like 95 or more. They had a little army cot (make the Col. feel at home!) in the storeroom for his naps between 'greeting/bucket autograph sessions! As for Elvis, we were at the Burger King in Kalamazoo, MI (visiting/family reunion), where he was 'sighted' in '77! Of course, it was all the buzz, amongst the locals... well, we didn't see Elvis, but there was an unconscious/dead? person lying in the parking lot, by the drive-thru!!! Maybe it was an apparition caused by the vortex that is present there! Longview-KFC: with much anticipation, we welcomed the new KFC/A&W combo that sprung up, but were repeatedly dissapointed by jacked up prices, consistently cold french fries that begged you to chop them up and blend with mayo packets, cuz they were only good for potato salad, disoriented workers, who emulated chickens with their heads cut off (a common sight, outside the colonel's kitchen window). I literally could place my order, get back in my car, and wash it next door, wax & chamois, vaccum... and then, maybe they'd call my number! (yes! I love the 11 secret herbs & spices flavor, but learned the secret of the gravy: after I filtered the fryer grease for 're-use', the sludge from the screen was scraped off and mixed with a packet of 'secret' ingredients and a pitcher of water!)
*the cole slaw is awesome too!

Jason: thanks for the mention of Tucson!
As I mentioned, I discovered my love for Italian, in NY...
When I moved to Tucson, I discovered 2 cuisines I didn't think I would like: Tucson is the home of 'AUTHENTIC' mexican food! The world famous Chimichanga (deep fried burrito) was invented there! In South Tucson (poor and gang ridden), there are a host of popular restaurants, generations old, where you could experience the real food of Mexico, and cheap! Proof of this was confirmed by simply looking around you: all of the customers are upper middle class white yuppies, that live in Barrio Volvo (the trendy neighborhood adjacent to UofA)!
On the south side of UofA (the sketchy side), there was a little hole-in-the wall lunch place: El Greco's Greek Cusina. A boyfriend brought me there on a 'date'... tiny & crowded, picnic tables/benches, and food served on paper plates. But the food was to die for! Doner Kebab (beef and lamb, skewer broiled, with tzaziki sauce: goat milk yogurt w/ cucumber & onion), served on a melt in your mouth olive oil griddled pita bread (baked fresh daily by Mr.K, a far cry from the dry grainy mid-eastern variety, more commonly found), and BELIEVE IT! the best rice I've ever had! Rice Pilaf! I hate rice! but their rice pilaf was flavorful(chicken broth?), hot&fresh, and glides across your tongue (due to the olive oil)!!! I was hooked!!! I ended up being a faithful regular (for 14 years!), simply walked in and sat... they knew what my order was!!!
                *Doner Kebab plate + (no coke!)Pepsi: $5
(remember the cheeseburgercheeseburger, no coke! Pepsi! greek diner sketches from Saturday Nite Live?)

                hehe!

                  Cheshyre:

p.s. do you remember the local news piece, early this year? The Colonel Sanders statue was stolen from the KFC in Astoria... and was later found by Kelso police, who spotted him sitting on the front porch of a local 'drug house'!!!

                  fuckin' tweekers!!!

(the homeowner claimed he 'found' the statue on a nearby sidewalk)

Actually the raver favorite I used to have in my piss broke days was top ramen but you would drain the water then add the seasoning and then some parmesan cheese.
